Trying to get to a bot using sound cues right after he spawned I think is legit, but knowing in advance where the spawn is, I've never been a fan of that. Thankfully that's the only level in the game that is like that, otherwise it would be a very shitty game to speedrun. Not much to say here, it's pure spawnkilling. Well back in the day I was doing pretty well, but I haven't been playing much recently and I'm nowhere near what I used to be, so you really shouldn't expect to see a flawless run, there will be plenty of mistakes, I still consider it alright though. Oh and one last thing before I detail that : I don't consider myself to be a very good Quake 3 player at all.
I did not spend a huge amount of time creating the perfect strategy for each map, and I'm sure that there are better strategies than what I use, but I will quickly explain to you for each map what I was basically trying to do. To prepare for the run, I just trained a little bit on each map to be able to win them consistently. There is RNG of course but there is so much RNG that it balances out in the end, it's not a bullshit RNG at one point of the game that will make you reset, the only thing the RNG does in Quake 3 really, is to make every run fresh and different, so a cool game to speedrun in my opinion.Īnd that's pretty much all I have to say. In Quake 3 you quickly learn the maps, and then it's pure performance based. Another reason I chose to run the game is that there is very little learning compared to other games where you have to memorize every single jump and timing (which is fun to do, but very time consuming). So anyway, I decided to make a run of it (easy to get World Record since I'm the first run, eh :p ?).
I mean, I know that the solo side of Quake 3 is not the most interesting part of the game at all, but still I find I can have some good fun with it. Quake 3 is one of my all-time favourite games, so I was really surprised to find no speedrun of it in Nightmare (there were some in "I Can Win" difficulty, but who wants to play or watch that ?), especially considering that Doom and Quake were like the first games to be run and that helped speedrunning grow, so seeing that there was no run for Quake 3 was a big disappointment.
